A former African sprint queen Mary Onyali has been appointed by Sports Minister Sunday Dare. Onyali won the women’s 100m event at 2003 All Africa Games held at the Moshood Abiola Stadium ( National Stadium then) in Abuja. The former sprinter also had a glorious career winning Olympic medals for the country in individual and relay races.

The appointment of Onyali is a welcome development to sports stakeholders, who insist on having former Nigerian internationals to be involved in sports administration in the country. Nigeria’s poor showing in recent times underly the fact that the country needs experienced hands in running sports in the country. It is believed that the former athletes have a better understanding of the issues, especially concerning their welfare.

In another development, Ese Brume, who won bronze in the long jump event at the just concluded World Athletics Championship, has been given a rousing welcome by her institution in the US. Brume won Nigeria’s only medal at the worlds and deserves kudos from the Nigerian sporting authorities.
