Sevilla Confirmed Europa League King
Sevilla FC of Spain came from a goal down to defeat Inter Milan 3-2 to win the 2020 Europa League title.
It got down pretty quick in Cologne, Germany when former Manchester United forward Romelu Lukaku scored in the fifth minute. Sevilla however hit back a few minutes later.
Luuk de Jong scored twice to turn the game on its head but Inter levelled things before the end of the first half of the thrilling encounter.
Lukaku, hero of 34 goals for Inter this season, ended the night and season horribly when he deflected an overhead kick into his own net.
Sevilla have won the title in 2014, 2015 and 2016 and have now added the 2020 edition to confirm their class int he competition.
Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui has had it rough in the past few years but his side are unbeaten since February, a run of 21 games.
“This is a magnificent club,” said the former Spain and Real Madrid boss. “I hope all the fans can celebrate it but with caution.
“This squad are great. They believe in it, what they work on and what they transmit. Even if we hadn’t won I’d still love these guys, but today we take home the prize. We always believed.”
Inter boss Antonio Conte’s is to discuss his future at the club after disagreeing with the president.
“We’ll take a few days off and then meet [with the president] with cool heads,” he said.
“I don’t have many regrets now, my players gave really everything they had against a team used to playing these kind of games.
“Many young players earned a great dose of valuable experience this season. They can continue on this path with great confidence.”
