Nasarawa Mohammed’s Late Winner Stuns Katsina Utd

Shammasu Mohammed came off the bench to score a last-gasp winner to help Nasarawa United beat spirited Katsina United 1-0 at the Lafia City Stadium on Sunday evening.

The youngster who replaced Aliyu Abdullahi in the 80th minute had contact with the ball only five times before breaking the deadlock in the additional minute.

The substitute found himself in the right place at the right time to power home a left-footed shot after being found through by Michael Tochukwu in the 95th minute in a fierce all-northern affairs.

The away side had obstructed the Solid Miners’ fluidy pattern of play from the blast of the whistle, including making some goalscoring attempts with Amah Chibundu and Salisu Mustapha the prime architects.

United, who began life without last season’s highest goalscorer, Silas Nwankwo due to an injury he picked up against Plateau United, unleashed everything against the visitors but they seemed to weather the storm. Charles Eguavon, Uche Ihuarulam and Aliyu Abdullahi all coming close to scoring the opener but got denied by both the defensive and goalkeeping brilliance of the Chanji Boys!

Shammasu’s lone strike, which was his first this season, was enough to lift the Solid Miners into the 6th position of the 2021/22 Nigeria Professional Football League table with twelve points from eight games.

They will next face Wikki Tourists FC in Bauchi in a week’s time.

Coach Bala Nikyu(NAS): “It was a great result against a side that have both lost and drawn at home this season.

“It’s good that we got our goal at that late moment as it ended any opportunity for them to fight back.

“Though the game was slow against our expectations, Katsina gave a good account of themselves.

“We now turn our attention to our next game against Wikki Tourists in Bauchi and we hope to make a positive statement there.”

Coach Azeez Muhammed(KAT): “At that moment when you weren’t supposed to lose concentration, my boys lost it.

“Though this is not the way we started the league because we are getting into shape now than before, but we will take it from here to get better.

“We had our chances right from the first-half but we failed to utilise any of them.

“I am disappointed with my boys but also happy with the rhythm of their game. We just need to keep our heads high and be in the right frame of mind.

“Nasarawa United are a big team, in fact, a continental side, they were fantastic last season, even though they are starting this new campaign on a slow pace, but I must give it to them for fighting till the end today and picking the maximum points.”

Shammasu Mohammed (NAS): “Scoring a goal at the depth of time to give your team the maximum points is one of the best feelings you can ever have.

“I wish to continue scoring, even though not at such times alone, but that will help my team win games.”
