Journeyman Mikel Joins Stoke City
John Mikel Obi has joined Championship side Stoke City on a one-year deal.
The former Chelsea midfielder was a free agent after leaving Turkish side Trabzonspor after a disagreement over Covid-19 midway into his contract.
Mikel is expected to bring his wealth of experience having played several years in top-flight and also some time at Middlesbrough.
Stoke boss Michael O’Neill said: ‘We’re delighted to bring Jon to the Club. His playing career speaks for itself and underlines his calibre as a player.
‘I was really impressed with him when we met for the first time and he outlined what he wants from the next phase of his career.
‘We spent four hours talking and he made it clear he wants to get back into the Premier League and finish his career there and hopefully he can do that with Stoke City.’
The player started his career as a graduate of Pepsi Soccer Academy in Jos before playing for Plateau United.
In Europe, he was with Lyn Oslo and from there to Chelsea- after a transfer battle with Manchester United.
He joined Chinese side Tianjin Teda after 11 years at Chelsea.
He won the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, Premier League, FA and League Cup at Chelsea.
He was also an Africa Cup of Nations winner in 2013 and bronze medallist. Olympic bronze medallist and FIFA U-20 World Cup silver medallist.
