EPL: Zaha Stuns former Club
Winfred Zaha scored a brace at Old Trafford as Crystal Palace stunned Manchester United 3-1 in the English Premier League encounter.
It was the first match of the season for United and their match rustiness was laid bare by the visitors.
Andros Townsend scored the opener while a penalty replay by their former player Zaha made it 2-0. A tame effort by Jordan Ayew saved by David De Gea had to be retaken by the Ivorian international.
United pulled one back but Zaha had the final word.
United manager Ole Gunnar Solkjaer said: “We need to look from within,” when asked if he needed new signings.
“We can play so much better than today. If you look at the players we have on the pitch and on the bench and not here, we know we can perform better.
“We are always looking to improve if there is something available at the right price but we can all look ourselves in the mirror.”
Everton thrashed new boys West Brom 5-2 in a match that saw the visitors reduced to ten men and their manager Slaven Bilic also sent off for protest.
New signing James Rodrigues got his first EPL goal while Calvin Lambert scored a hat trick.
Arsenal survived a scare to beat West Ham 2-1 in their first match at the Emirates Stadium Saturday night.
Alexandre Lacazette opened scoring off a cross from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang while Mikhail Antonio equalised at the stroke of half time.
Eddie Nketiah came on as a 77th minute substitute and got the winner in the 85th minute.
It was a goal fest when Leeds took on fellow promoted side Fulham and it ended 4-3 in the favour of the former.
On Sunday afternoon, rampaging Tottenham Hotspur hit Southampton 5-2 at Saint Mary’s with Son Heung-min scoring four goals with all the assists from Harry Kane.
