SWAN President frowns at poor treatment of members

The national president of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Comrade Honour Sirawo, has lamented what he describes as “the poor treatment” of members of the Association at the ongoing National Sports Festival, Edo 2020.

Mr. Honour while addressing members at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium, Thursday, decried the inability of the organizers of the Games to provide basic media amenities and the bare minimums pertaining to the media coverage of the event to members of SWAN.

He attributed part of the struggles and inadequacies of the organizers to the inability of the federal government through the federal Ministry of Youth and Sports to financially support the government of Edo state which had exhausted its budget for the Festival after the competition suffered a couple of postponements before it eventually commenced on April 2, 2021.

Mr. Sirawo who is also the Permanent Secretary of the Rivers state Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, however called on members to remain calm and continue with their “commendable coverage” of the Games while he continues to interface with the Games’ organizers with a view to improving the working conditions of members at the event.

The sports championship which is currently taking place in Benin city, the Edo state capital, is the twentieth edition of the biennial competition and has participants drawn from all thirty-six states of the Federation and the FCT.

THURSDAY, 8/04/2021

So far, Team Nasarawa has won three medals(all bronze), all of which came from Taekwondo and Judo Sports.

The duo of Laadi Ihuo Louisa and Bashiru Musa Usman did the State proud in Taekwondo while Madu Daniel clinched the bronze medal off Usman Jibrin from Kano State after the latter was stripped of the medal in the +100 heavyweight Judo men’s category due to some irregularities.

As another day births, Team Nasarawa are hoping to add to the medal haul.

In women’s Basketball, Team Nasarawa succumbed 49-74 to Kano State in their first group match played at the Emotan College Basketball Court, Edo State.

The women will try all they can to sneak into the final when they take on Lagos State on Friday afternoon at same venue in their last group game.

Action resumes in Boxing later today when Musa Yusuf, who is already in the medal’s stage, finds his opponent in the men’s 69kg Welterweight category said to take place at the Ugbowo Sports Complex.

Scrabble Sport also has so much to offer today at the Imaguero College after Team Nasarawa recorded some successes the previous day, in both the singles and doubles categories.

The Scrabble team will be partaking in the Men’s Doubles after the Singles, as they are currently topping in the men’s category at round 13.

Another area of medal hopes today are in Karate, Kung-Fu Wushu and Golf.

However, another good news is that injured +78kg Grace Haruna has recovered from the exhaustion she suffered yesterday during her fight against Chinwe Mbah from Bayelsa State and has reunited with her teammates in the camp of Team Nasarawa.

Like always, you will be kept abreast on how events unfold at the ongoing 20th National Sports Festival tagged “Edo 2020” where all States of the Federation, including F.C.T. Abuja, are participating.
